Between Algorithms and Pedagogical Choices, Sigma Educação Discusses Who Is Shaping the School of the Future

Sigma Educação e Tecnologia, a Brazilian education and technology company, has been following a recurring debate: discussions about the future of K–12 education tend to focus on the arrival of new technologies in schools while overlooking the fundamental question of what schools should prioritize teaching.

This reversal of priorities results in broad predictions about artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or any other emerging technology without answering a more concrete question: which knowledge and skills remain essential, regardless of the tools available at any given point in history?

This article explores the changes needed in school education so that it can continue preparing children and adolescents for a changing world. The discussion goes beyond merely listing the devices and applications available on the market.

Technology Determines the Tools, Not the Curriculum

Sigma Educação highlights that, throughout history, technology has changed the way educational content reaches students—from blackboards to projectors and from printed books to screens—without necessarily changing what educational institutions have decided is worth teaching in each era.

This distinction is important because confusing tools with content can lead to debates centered on the use of specific applications, when the more relevant issue is the pedagogical purpose for which they are used and the reasons behind those choices.

As Sigma Educação points out, however, prioritizing technology as a means rather than an end in education restores the order of priorities that should guide any meaningful curricular change in Brazilian K–12 education over the coming years.

Personalized Learning Requires Sound Pedagogical Decisions, Not Just Advanced Technology

Reading, mathematical reasoning, an understanding of natural phenomena, and historical knowledge remain the foundation upon which more sophisticated skills are built, regardless of the development of new tools throughout the coming school years.

Recent educational studies reinforce the idea that well-established prior knowledge facilitates the acquisition of new skills. Therefore, abandoning content considered traditional in favor of generic competencies may undermine the very foundation upon which those competencies should be built.

Sigma Educação notes that skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, although often presented as something new, have always been part of a high-quality education. Today, these skills have taken on renewed urgency in a world where vast amounts of information are available at any moment.

Personalized learning, adjustments to students’ learning pace, and the implementation of different forms of assessment represent significant structural changes. These changes depend on pedagogical decisions about what should be taught, not merely on the technology selected to enable personalization in the classroom.

An educational institution can adopt the most advanced platform available on the market and still offer a fragmented curriculum, demonstrating that the tool itself does not determine what truly matters when educating each new generation of enrolled students.

Schools Choose What to Teach; Technology Simply Executes

Sigma Educação explains that the role of schools in the future depends less on predicting which technology will dominate and more on clearly deciding which knowledge and skills deserve a guaranteed place in the education of each generation of students over the years.

Schools that treat this decision as a starting point, rather than as an automatic consequence of the technology available, are more likely to integrate new tools without losing sight of what truly matters when educating children and adolescents throughout compulsory K–12 education.

Ultimately, the future of K–12 education will be determined less by technology itself and more by schools’ ability to intentionally choose what remains worth teaching, regardless of the technological context.
