According to Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio, a psychoanalyst working in mental health and family relationships, psychoanalytic listening finds its most relevant clues in the seemingly disconnected details of everyday life, those that reveal the family environment in which a person is immersed. Many families spend years living with a sense of distress that they can feel but cannot explain, and what is described as “stress” or a “difficult phase” often conceals a more longstanding form of suffering that has not yet had the space to be recognized.

A child who cries for no apparent reason, an adult who becomes irritated easily, a silence that settles over meals without anyone knowing why. These signs, considered individually, may seem too minor to deserve attention, but together they form a pattern that is rarely perceived from within the family itself and may indicate suffering related to children’s mental health.

Why does family suffering often go unnoticed?

Within the home, signs of emotional distress are often absorbed into the daily routine. A quieter child may be seen as “calm,” while a more withdrawn adult may be described as “reserved.” Without an external point of comparison, families tend to normalize behaviors that, when viewed from the outside, reveal much more than they initially appear to.

Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio emphasizes that this normalization is not a failure of attention on the part of family members, but a natural effect of closeness. Those who live within a particular dynamic lose the distance necessary to recognize patterns that repeat over time, precisely because each small change occurs gradually and almost imperceptibly from one day to the next within the family environment.

How does psychoanalytic listening capture what goes unnoticed?

Psychoanalytic listening does not begin with direct questions such as “what is wrong?” Instead, it relies on details: the way someone tells a story, what is mentioned in passing, and the topics that keep returning without the person realizing that they are repeatedly bringing them up.

In Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio’s view, it is through these repetitions that the most revealing signs emerge. A sentence repeated several times in different ways, a subject that a person consistently avoids, or a silence that repeatedly appears at the same point in a conversation can all serve as relevant clinical material, even when the family has never connected these details to a deeper form of suffering, which may even be related to an unresolved childhood trauma.

This attention to detail also requires patience from the professional. There is no rush to reach a quick diagnosis; the aim is to carefully follow the moment when these fragments begin to form a more coherent meaning for the person being heard.

The role of time in identifying hidden forms of suffering

Unlike a quick assessment, the analytical process allows patterns to emerge gradually over the course of several sessions. This is essential because more longstanding forms of suffering rarely appear clearly at the beginning of treatment.

Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio notes that this gradual construction is part of the method itself, rather than an obstacle to be overcome. Each session adds another layer of understanding until what initially seemed scattered begins to form a clearer meaning, both for the professional and for the person in analysis, who starts to recognize connections that were previously invisible.

Why does the family not always perceive what lies behind a behavior?

Daily interaction creates a type of familiarity that makes it difficult to perceive gradual changes. A behavior that develops slowly rarely sounds an alarm because each individual change may seem insignificant on its own.

As Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio points out, this is one of the reasons why an outside professional perspective can bring clarity that a family, even when attentive and caring, may not be able to achieve on its own. It is not a lack of care, but a natural limitation of those who are part of the dynamic being observed and are too involved to see the bigger picture.

What changes when suffering finally has a name?

In Taiza Tosatt Eleoterio’s assessment, giving a name to suffering that previously had no explanation can often bring relief, even when the process of working through it is still at an early stage. The family begins to see behaviors that were previously considered isolated as part of the same pattern, which can completely change the way they deal with them in everyday life.

This recognition also redistributes responsibilities within the home. Instead of treating a behavior as a whim or character flaw, the family begins to understand it as an expression of something that needs to be listened to rather than immediately corrected.

Thus, the value of psychoanalytic listening lies less in providing ready-made answers and more in building, through time and careful attention to detail, an understanding that everyday coexistence alone was unable to produce about the family dynamic itself.
