The United States economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter of 2026, according to the advance estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on October 29. The result marked an acceleration from the revised 2.2% growth recorded in the second quarter and offered a new reading on the strength of economic activity before further official revisions.

Investment and household spending support expansionWhy the data matter for global marketsNext step is a revised GDP estimate

The report places the latest expansion above the previous quarter’s pace at a moment when investors, companies and governments are closely watching the direction of the world’s largest economy. The figures can shape expectations for financial markets and international capital flows, including conditions that affect the dollar, borrowing costs and emerging-market assets such as those in Brazil.

Investment and household spending support expansion

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the third-quarter increase was supported mainly by higher investment, consumer spending and government expenditures. Together, those components helped lift overall output and showed that activity remained broad enough to produce a faster growth rate than in the second quarter.

Household consumption is a central part of the U.S. economy, while investment provides an indication of spending by businesses and other economic actors on future productive capacity. Government outlays also contributed to the quarter’s performance. The BEA’s advance estimate, however, is an initial calculation and is subject to revision as additional information becomes available.

Exports limited part of the increase, while imports rose during the quarter. Because imports are counted as a subtraction in the calculation of domestic production, the combination restrained the headline result even as other components strengthened. The figures therefore present a mixed composition: stronger domestic drivers were accompanied by less favorable trade effects.

Why the data matter for global markets

A faster quarterly growth rate can influence how investors assess the resilience of the U.S. economy. It does not, by itself, establish a new decision by the Federal Reserve or determine the path of interest rates. Instead, GDP data become one of several inputs used by markets and policymakers when evaluating economic conditions.

The release may affect expectations for U.S. Treasury yields, equity markets and the dollar as investors reassess the pace of activity. Stronger growth can support the view that economic demand remains firm, while the composition of the expansion helps market participants distinguish between consumption, investment, public spending and trade. Those reactions can also be transmitted to international markets through changes in capital allocation and financing conditions.

For Brazil, the connection is indirect but relevant. Shifts in expectations about the U.S. economy can influence the dollar’s value, the flow of foreign investment and the cost at which companies and governments raise funds internationally. Brazilian businesses exposed to exchange-rate movements may also feel the effects of changes in global financial conditions, although the GDP release alone does not determine the direction of the Brazilian currency or markets.

Next step is a revised GDP estimate

The BEA identifies the October release as an advance estimate, meaning the third-quarter figure is not the final reading. Additional data can lead to changes in the reported growth rate or in the contribution assigned to individual components of GDP. That distinction is important when comparing the current result with the revised figure for the second quarter.

The agency’s official release schedule lists November 25, 2026, for the next estimate of third-quarter GDP. The update will give markets and analysts a more complete basis for assessing whether the 3.4% annualized pace accurately reflects the quarter’s performance.

For now, the advance estimate depicts an economy that gained momentum from the second quarter, with investment, household spending and government expenditures leading the expansion. The result adds to the information available on U.S. economic conditions and provides another reference point for global investors and Brazilian companies monitoring the dollar, international capital and the broader cost of financing.
